The BBC reports that we may in the future be able to view our tax records online, if the Government’s attempts to make the tax system more transparent are followed through.
I think the extra visibility of how much tax we’re paying sounds like a good idea, if it can be done in a way that’s;
- accurate, so it doesn’t create more queries than it solves
- doesn’t cost the taxpayer millions in development (or at least starts to save money in the log-term)
- secure, so that there aren’t worries about identity fraud etc.
The recent addition of an online system for collecting tax have been praised as a “real achievement” but it’s still unclear whether it has proved to provide value for money.
